I hadn’t been to Glen Carlou for so long it may as well have been my fist visit. I have however been enjoying their wines over the years so was excited to try their food. Along with a few media peoople, I went to taste the new winter menu last week and was so impressed.

We sampled a selection of smaller plate versions off the menu and I loved the flavour combinations – including many South African inspirations, and interesting textures, all paired beautifully with their wines. The Gruyère and cauliflower soufflé with spinach crème, mint, coriander and walnuts was my favourite dish. I could have just eaten bowls and bowls of this and am determined to try and recreate something similar.

I can highly recommend this beautiful tasting room and restaurant for a winter trip to the Winelands. I often judge a restaurant by the bread they bring to the table. If a chef pays attention to the bread, you generally find that carries through to the rest of the menu. At Glen Carlou it is all made in-house and the lovely selection was utterly delicious, I challneg you not to tuck into at least 3 types.

Oh, and they also have an art gallery adjacent to the restaurant with is well worth stopping in to.
