visit FABER at avondale

FABER restaurant at Avondale Wine Estate in Paarl

Acclaimed chef Eric Bulpitt has moved from Newton Johnson in the Hemel en Aarde Valley and found a new home at Avondale in Paarl. The restaurant is called FABER and I was privileged to be a part of their first official service yesterday and enjoyed a delicious 3-course lunch. I wasnt surprised that Eric and his team managed to seemingly effortlessly knock together a media lunch on their first day as well as serve their first set of clientele. His whole team moved with him to the new spot so they operate like a well-oiled machine. Continue Reading →

the most delicious peruvian ceviche

the most delicious peruvian ceviche

I met Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger at Vegas Uncork’d last year and tasted this Peruvian cerviche at the Caesars Palace Grand Tasting of the event. If you scroll through the post you will see a picture of them plus the cerviche which was beautifully presented in hollowed out and dried avocado skins. These two fabulous women have worked together since 1982 and are the co-owners of Border Grill in LA and Vegas. It was also the best cerviche I have ever encountered. I loved it so much I traipsed through the seemingly endless maize of the Forum shops in Caesars Palace to find the restaurant the next day. I simply had to eat it again. I’m mildly obsessed with Latin American flavours and was desperate to enjoy a good Mexican meal while on my short trip to the USA. The only thing that could have made this delicious ceviche better would have been to eat it with plantain chips like I had at Border Grill. I had it with corn chips instead which of course is always a good idea anyway. Continue Reading →

visit the vineyard hotel

I spent some of my childhood living across the river from the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, so was delighted to be invited to dinner and a sleep over on Friday night. They run monthly wine dinners, and on Friday it was Rust en Vrede’s turn. Who can resist their exquiste wines? This was my second of the Vineyard wine dinners I’ve been to and both were lovely. Special menu’s are created around a selection of wines from featured estates, and you are guaranteed to drink few gems and eat a delicious meal. You also get to meet the winemaker on the night, so this is a must do for any food and wine enthusiast in Cape Town. Check out the calendar of the remaining Taste of 2016 wine-pairing and dining evenings which happen bi-monthly.

The Vineyard Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

The Vineyard Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

I loved staying at the Vineyard. Its one of the few privately owned hotels and they have built a solid reputation with constantly high occupancy rates. They deserve all the success. The service is warm and welcoming and there really is a personal touch. If you don’t get to stay there its worth visiting for a drink in their beautiful Garden Lounge or breakfast in the Square Restaurant. Their Spa is one of my favourite in Cape Town and housed separately in the very tranquil garden next to the pool.  Continue Reading →

boschendal farm to table festival

Die Werf Restaurant on Boschendal Wine Estate

Boschendal Estate, Franschhoek

I spent this last week-end ensconced at Boschendal enjoying as many parts of the inaugural Farm to Table Festival as time would allow. You couldn’t get a better winelands setting to host a food festival of this nature. Nestled on the outskirts of Franschhoek with 3 mountain ranges in the distance, its jaw dropping beautiful. This farm walks the talk in terms of producing ethical food. From their organic food garden, to their free range eggs and pasture reared Angus beef. This is food of the highest quality and Boschendal played host to a handful of their own and other local experts who came along to share a part of their own food stories.

Utterly inspiring. Continue Reading →
