I’m becoming increasingly interested in adding greens to my breakfast repertoire. Especially if I take the time to make something a little more fancy other than straight up eggs and bacon on toast. Avo is obviously the winning addition. Everyone loves smashed avo on toast with a poached egg, but spinach is also the perfect green to pair with an egg recipe. These toast baskets are the prettiest and most perfect vessel to hold a soft poached egg. Topped with crispy bacon and roasted tomatoes, they become a piece of breakfast heaven.

Inspired by a favourite dish at a favourite Jozi breakfast spot, I have wanted to make these for years. I stopped in for this famous dish of theirs while up in Joburg recently and they remained as delicious as I remember. The version at Nice is made with a tomato and onion relish that is fab, but I’m obsessed with roasting tomatoes and adding balsamic. I spent some of my childhood living across the river from the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, so was delighted to be invited to dinner and a sleep over on Friday night. They run monthly wine dinners, and on Friday it was Rust en Vrede’s turn. Who can resist their exquiste wines? This was my second of the Vineyard wine dinners I’ve been to and both were lovely. Special menu’s are created around a selection of wines from featured estates, and you are guaranteed to drink few gems and eat a delicious meal. You also get to meet the winemaker on the night, so this is a must do for any food and wine enthusiast in Cape Town. Check out the calendar of the remaining Taste of 2016 wine-pairing and dining evenings which happen bi-monthly.

I loved staying at the Vineyard. Its one of the few privately owned hotels and they have built a solid reputation with constantly high occupancy rates. They deserve all the success. The service is warm and welcoming and there really is a personal touch. If you don’t get to stay there its worth visiting for a drink in their beautiful Garden Lounge or breakfast in the Square Restaurant. Their Spa is one of my favourite in Cape Town and housed separately in the very tranquil garden next to the pool.  Continue Reading →

French toast + whipped lemony cream cheese with a dash of honey + fresh peaches or nectarines + a generous drizzle of honey = deliciously decadent breakfast treat that can be served as an open or closed sandwich.

I’ve used in season ripe nectarines because they are so perfect and juicy right now. Fresh peaches, or even tinned would be lovely too (yes, I admit, I love tinned peaches). Continue Reading →

I have resisted making granola for all these years because I knew it would land up being another food on my list that I would never be able to buy again. Firstly its so ridiculously easy to make, and secondly you get to craft a recipe exactly how you like it – with what flavours you enjoy and how much fat you think you can indulge in. I also like a lot of nuts in my granola. I don’t enjoy fishing around the packet until I find what I want and land up with the last half of the bag devoid of any visible particulates.

This is pretty much a perfect granola for me – but seriously just adapt and change it to suit your taste. Like I said, I want a lot of nuts and I didn’t skimp on mixing in four different types (although almonds dominate). The cashews, macadamia’s and the hazelnuts make it super indulgent, and I this is exactly what I want from my granola.

I like seeds too, so next time I might throw those into the mix. I particularly enjoy toasty sunflower and pumpkin seeds with my breakfast. Continue Reading →
