Hot cross bun french toast waffles

Easter is nearly upon us and I’ve always got hot cross buns lying around. I absolutely adore them. I stash them in the freezer too so I always have them at easy reach. This recipe for hot cross bun French toast waffles is a fun and easy way to turn your buns into a more substantial breakfast treat and builds on from my previous recipe for french toast waffles.  Continue Reading →

french toast sandwich with cream cheese, peaches & honey

french toast sandwich with cream cheese, peaches & honey

French toast + whipped lemony cream cheese with a dash of honey + fresh peaches or nectarines + a generous drizzle of honey = deliciously decadent breakfast treat that can be served as an open or closed sandwich.

I’ve used in season ripe nectarines because they are so perfect and juicy right now. Fresh peaches, or even tinned would be lovely too (yes, I admit, I love tinned peaches). Continue Reading →

french toast with miso and parmesan

french toast with miso and parmesan

I wanted to pack as much umami flavour as I could into this French toast recipe and what better way than with a good dash of miso paste and a handful of freshly grated Parmesan cheese. I mean, yes!

I tend to think of French toast along the sweet lines, but there is no confusion here. Miso is one of my favourite ingredients and I’ve been putting it into everything from bolognese, to mac and cheese, to ice cream. Its got so much X factor in terms of taste and doesn’t take over the flavour party. Continue Reading →

french toast on bree

a lovely little tapas and wine bar on bree street

There are times when you walk into a restaurant or bar, breathe a sigh of relief and feel instantly at home.

French Toast on Bree street is one of those places for me.  The Building was an uninteresting costume hire shop that has been knocked into a space that is light and airy. With its exposed brick and ceiling beams, it’s New York meets Parisienne wine bar, in an eclectic mix of old and new with a feminine touch. All the seats are build for comfort, from the velvet banquettes to the leather bar stools. After sitting down, you are going to want to hang out for a while.

Hang out is what they want you to do.  Its not a formal eating place, and they dont take reservations but we went on a Thursday night and the place was buzzing and fairly full.

I really enjoyed the vibe.

They serve a plethroa of wines by the glass from an impressive and extensive winelist of more than 80 wines. They also offer ‘wine flights’ which are a selction of 3 wines of 50ml each, which is a really nice way to compare regions by cultivar.

The food is an array of generous portions of Mediterranean style tapas. They also have their signature french toast, which is really a french toast sandwich with banana and pecan nuts as the filling.  Served with a scoop of ice cream, this totally transported me into food heaven.

We had a selction of 6 tapas between the 2 of us, one bottle of wine and a flight of Sauvignon blanc and this was just perfect.

It’s the perfect place to just pop into, meet a friend or conduct a casual business meeting.

Owned and run by the very warm and friendly Karin Visser and John Harrison, I can see myself becoming a bit of a regular.
