the oriental residence in bangkok

Oriental Residence, Bangkok, Thailand

I just got back from an amazing three-week adventure in South East Asia with our first stop being Bangkok. We were lucky enough to stay at the Oriental Residence for our first two nights in this amazing city, and this was a perfect soft landing and start to our holiday.

The hotel is called a residence because about 20% of the rooms are occupied with more permanent residents and all the rooms come equipped with little kitchenettes and a dining table making a longer stay more independent. This is a good option if you are travelling with a family and especially with small children.

The property is located in Wireless Road sandwiched between the Netherlands and US embassy in a quieter and very plush embassy / shopping district in Bangkok. 500 metres from Lumpini Park (the Central Park of Bangkok) and near the BTS metro system, this is the perfect oasis to escape some of the hustle and bustle of the city.

The pool area was a highlight and I loved taking a dip on the 4th floor overlooking the city skyline. It’s partly in and outdoors which is kind of ideal when you want to escape the monsoons and blazing heat.

The hotel is the right size to feel homely but with enough luxury to feel like a boutique hotel. Its elegant and modern with a light and bright feel.

Here are a few of my pictures. Continue Reading →

a food & travel adventure to johannesburg

Street food stand at The Fox Market Shed, Johannesburg

I’ve just got back from a whirlwind food and travel adventure to Johannesburg where I caught up with the food scene in our biggest and most vibrant city. I used to live there, so Joburg is my second home and I love visiting. Normally I stay with family and friends and land up spending most of my time in their homes and don’t get out as much as Id like. Last week was a little different. I stayed in four amazing hotels and bounced around old favourite haunts and discovered a few amazing new places. kulula.com  – South Africa’s number one low-cost airline and Avios Rewards Programme (who they have recently partnered with) invited me to fly to any destination in South Africa for a foodie adventure and I chose Joburg. South Africa is filled with exciting destinations and Avios customers can earn three Avios for every R10 spent on Kulula flights. If you are not collecting points every single time you fly, you are wasting an opportunity. Places to go, people to see, and food to eat is what I always say. Continue Reading →
