I had heard about the opening of a new restaurants in Vredehoek by friends of mine from Knysna. They know the owner of ‘Woodlands Eatery’ Larry Steenkamp from Emily Moon in Plett, where he was a partner in the business.
We popped it recently for a Sunday lunch.
Woodlands is located at 2 Deer Park in Vredehoek where Yum used to be. Larry and his wife Sarah Cronwright have decorated the place in a very eclectic and quaint style. Using old vintage bric and brac and used wooden finishes, I really liked the quirky and homely feel.
The menu is simple, with a selection of pizzas including their signature ‘slow roast lamb’, a selection of salads, pasta and meat and fish options.
Their philosophy is not to be too complicated, but rather focussing on affordable meals using really good ingredients to service a local clientèle. The menu will change frequently, with some of the favourites being permanent fixtures. They want you to come back more often and they want to be a popular and busy neighbourhood restaurant.
We ate a salad (very fresh and not an iceberg leaf in sight), pizzas, a pasta dish, the chickpea burger and a salt and pepper calamari. The pizzas are rustic, substantial and rectangular.
Everything was very nice. I felt my pizzas was a little lacking in depth of flavour and the base possibly a bit under seasoned, but then I have big expectations in the flavour department. My friends really enjoyed theirs.
The owners are friendly and welcoming and you feel right at home. The prices are extremely appealing making this an excellent new spot in the area. Its the perfect place to pop in for a cheerful and casual meal.
I’m looking forward to going back in the evening to check out the vibe then.
