When I get invited to taste a menu cooked by one of my favourite and most inspiring chefs, Franck Dangereaux and paired with the fabulous Nititda wines, I get very excited.
Following on from their highly successful Steenburg winter menu, The Foodbarn has just launched their Nitida menu and at very favourable R215 for 5 courses with 5 wines, its an opportunity that simply cannot be missed.

I ate the smoked Bonita (tuna) slices with avo, nori, aioli, with pickeld ginger which went beautifully with the ’11 Sauvignon Blanc

I then had the line fish roasted on pine needles with wilted spinach, conifer jus and garlic cream, paired with the Nitida Coronata ’09. Mind numbingly delicious all round, and just had to find out a bit more about how the pine needles were used to flavour this dish.
Next was the slow roasted lamb cutlet served on a butternut fritter with sauteed apples, wholegrain mustard and rosemary cream with the Cabernet Sauvigonon ’09. Possibly the best lamb cutlet I have eaten, (certainly in recent memory) offsetting the sweet apple and mustard. There is a choice between a lamb and a pork cutlet on this course.

There is a choice of two desserts, the marjolaine layered cake with cherry sauce:

or the strawberry basil panna cotta with home made ice cream. Both sensational.

Check out the The Foodbarn website for more info on cooking demonstrations which take place on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm

Will definitely have to try that out!
Hi Sam. I’m dying to try the pine-needle linefish. Where they foraged here in Noordhoek? Would love to hear more on that. B
Bern, I was so intrigued by the pine needle infusion and yes he would have foraged locally. A very subtle flavour, and I am keen to explore this in my kitchen too.
ooh, booked for sunday lunch. looks awesome.
You wont be disappointed, defs one om favourite restaurants in CT. Enjoy! The Nitida menu is ridiculously good value.
Hi Sam
Tx for finding us lots of lovely winter specials!
It’s my husband’s 50th on Tuesday… and his dad has come out especially from the UK. I want to make it a memorable experience but not tooo fancy. His dad is more a fish n chips type of bloke! Also, we have 3 teenage daughters, they love getting dressed up but don’t eat mountains of food.
Do you have any suggesstions?? I found the “The Captains Table” in Simom’s Town. Looks lovely but I can’t find any reviews. Also, convenient as we live in Kommetjie.
Thanks so much!
Love
Sandy
Hi Sandy, I can highly recommend the Foodbarn for a special birthday dinner and its the best restaurant in your area. I do not know ‘The Captains Table’ in Simonstown so I cant comment. Kalk Bay has Harbour House or Live Bait, which are both good for seafood.
Enjoy the celebrations.
Thanks
Sam
Hi Sam
Tx for this. We’ve been to the Food Barn and the Harbour House and Live Bait. All FANTASTIC! Think we’ll give The Captains Table a try. I’ll let u know.
