chef ryan outside his delightful restaurant in the heart of franschhoek

In a world where cooking is the mainstream and every one is watching it on TV or sending pictures of their food around social media, Ryans Kitchen in Franschhoek is the perfect place to feel like you are getting in on the action.

Every table in this restaurant is a ‘chefs table’ which forms part of the kitchen in the beautiful Rusthof Country House in Franschhoek, and in summer there is additional seating outside on the patio.

Ryan has cooked in an impressive array of kitchens all over the world and has settled in this lovely spot with his wife Lana who charmingly handles the front of house. His focus is on local ingredients with historical and cultural significance. So basically South African classics given a big update and twist.

I loved it. Its modern and experimental and the dishes are creatively plated.

I was invited to attend a lunch with a handful of local chefs and food bloggers to experience Ryan’s cuisine recently.

The lunch was made all the more superb by being paired with a stunning selection of Haut Espoir Wines presented by charismatic wine maker Rob Armstrong.

We drank the Cloudfall 2009, the Semillion Reserve 2006, the Viognier 2008, the 2006 Shiraz, the 2005 Chardonnay Reserve and rounded off this delicious feast with Rob’s beautiful white Non-Vintage port made from Semillion and fortified with brandy to give it ‘a kick’.

There’s a little bit of restaurant theatre as you watch the chefs quietly getting on in the kitchen and a bit of theatre when your food is presented. The whole experience is bound to surprise and delight.

a really fun afternoon that went on and on and on.....

My blog friend Jeanne from Cooksister was out from London recently and visited Ryans Kitchen the week before. She ate many of the same dishes we did and has a lovely review on her site which can be found by clicking here.
