Last week was the annual Sunday Times Chef of the Year competition sponsored by Foodcorp. The chefs in each of the four categories get a mystery basket of seasonal and local ingredients, and have a four and a half hours to whip up a three course meal. This is a fabulous event that showcases some of South Africa’s best cooking talent.
The winners of the 4 categories were:
Rudi Liebenberg of the Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town who claimed the 2012 Sunday Times Chef of the Year title; Tiaan Langenegger from Overture Restaurant, Stellenbosch was honoured with the Young Chef of the Year title; Nik Tonglet of The Test Kitchen by Luke Dale Roberts, Cape Town was awarded the Junior Chef of the Year title; and Mark Iveson from Gonubie Hotel, East London won the Sunday Times’ Stalwart of the Kitchen award.
On Thursday evening the awards ceremony took place at Foodcoprps 7th Floor venue followed by a cocktail party. I got to meet the hysterical Nik Rabinowitz (MC for the night) and talk to a few of my favourite South African chefs.
This picture of me with Nik Rabinowitz and Jackie Cameron from Hartford House made it into the Sunday Times.
