Janse & Co have launched their Spring menu and it is inspired and delicious. They are very particular about sourcing all their ingredients and utilizing them to their full potential. This includes building relationships with their suppliers and supporting local farming practices and small producers. This dialogue and relationship is an important part of the creative process for Arno Janse van Rensburg and his team and it shows on the plate.
Each dish is thoughtfully curated to bring out the best in the ingredients used. The food is sourced ethically and responsibly; it is handled with respect and knowledge to create a dish that is simply delicious and beautiful. This is a casual fine dining restaurant offering a tasting menu. Guests have the option to choose from 3 courses, with their wine menu that introduces boutique wineries and winemakers from the Western Cape.
The restaurant, which is located in Kloof Street and beautifully decorated with black walls and colourful murals has various dining areas. The entrance space has a feature street art wall of edible South African flowers, and this is a more informal area. They have a long harvest table that can accommodate up to 18 guests and situated next to their display fridges of house-made charcuterie and wine. This could work as a semi-private dining space.
The main indoor area is located opposite the open working kitchen which is immaculately tidy and industrial-chic looking. In Summer the spacious courtyard lends itself to al fresco dining.
Our lunch kicked off with an impressive bread selection and house-made charcuterie, once again reinforcing my theory that a good bread course generally leads to an excellent meal.
This was followed by a dish of lettuce, mullet, samphire and passion fruit, which was inspired. I loved the flavour, texture and the lightness of this dish.
The second course of blanched seasonal asparagus shrouded in a finely shaved snow of chicken bresaola with sesame spice was again completely original and tasty.
The third course was bream cooked to perfection with broad beans, wood sorrel and turnip.
Desert was a sweet and savoury almost cheese-course of ash goats cheese with a strawberry and basil salad. I just needed a few crackers to help with the richness of the cheese.
