A winter staycation at the luxurious Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town on

When you live in Cape Town, staying in one of the cities best hotels isn’t something that really happens, so my staycation at the iconic Belmond Mount Nelson last weekend was a bucket list item to tick off. I have adored this hotel forever and to experience it as a sleep-over guest for the first time was a special affair. You feel pampered from the minute you arrive and until you check out, and I didn’t want to leave the luxurious cocoon of the Rose Cottage suite I stayed in.

The hotel has two heated outdoor pools and even though it was a proper Cape Town wintery day, I couldn’t resist a swim in the secluded cottage pool. Followed by a bubble bath and glass of champagne, it felt like I was away on holiday.

As international guests are sadly still scarce in Cape Town, the hotel is offering a few amazing rate deals geared towards locals. I enjoyed the Suite Life with Moet & Chandon package which includes a luxury suite for two people with a bottle of Moet & Chandon, a winter special dinner, cognac & chocolates in the Planet bar & breakfast. Sadly, due to the alcohol ban, this package is on hold until its lifted and further notice.

The hotel is running a winter warmer lunch & dinner special menu that includes Chef Rudi’s famous three-cheese fondue made with Gruyère, Emmentaler and mature cheddar.

This is what I chose, and it was deliciously decadent and totally authentic. It can be enjoyed in the hotel’s lounge, conservatory, or fireside in the Planet bar. The Celebration of Cognac and Chocolate for two was a sweet ending to our meal with Hennessy VSOP and chilli chocolate fudge, chocolate orange and dark chocolate peach and hazelnut truffle.

The Teas at the nelly are the absolute best and are served every day. Due to covid protocols, there is no longer a buffet, but as with their breakfast service, all the goodies are brought to your table. The lounge and patio are amongst my favourite places to while away an afternoon.
