It’s been one month to the day that I returned from my trip to Amsterdam and Paris and sadly it feels like a lifetime ago. I love the halo feeling after a holiday abroad when the memories linger for a few weeks making the whole thing stretch out. I love the joy of buying my first bottle of wine in a restaurant when I get back and revel in how inexpensive it is compared to Europe, and I rejoice that I can eat in world-class restaurants and drink amazing wine for a third of the price. As much as I adore the place, this is definitely a highlight of living in South Africa. I have been trying to edit my images bit by bit and each time I do, all the memories came flooding back. I’m excited to be able to share (at long last) my first set of pics from Amsterdam and of a foodie place I really enjoyed while I was there. The Foodhallen is a must visit place in Amsterdam.
Everyone I spoke to about where to eat prior to my trip recommended Foodhallen. Located fairly centrally in a renovated train depot called De Hallen, it was the perfect place for me to sample a variety of things on my own. I loved it so much I went twice. The first time was with two friends and we shared about 5 dishes. On my second trip, I went back to the delicious tacos from Taqueria and the Bahn Mi from the Vietnamese food stand.
Foodhallen is a permanent food market open day and night and you can from all over the world at over 20 stands. The Oysters were fresh, the gin & tonics huge and the soft shell crab bao dream worthy. The dim sum was very good and there was always a queue, but the pork tacos from Taqueria kinda stole the show for me. I only sampled a fraction of what was on offer and everything looked amazing. Drinks are efficiently sold via 3 bars including a large central bar, a gin & tonic and wine bar and a beer bar. You won’t need to wait around for your drinks. The place was buzzing when I was there but with ample seating, it was easy to find a place to perch.
Also..….
- They have a DJ on a Friday & Saturday night
- Live music on a Tuesday
- Its a great people watching spot.
- If you go in the day, browse the trendy shops around the market
- There is also a Foodhallen in Rotterdam
Here are a few pictures to show you what it was like:
