A weekend at the Tankwa River Lodge Drizzle and Dip

A while ago I spent a weekend away with friends at the Tankwa River Lodge, an exquisite Perfect Hideaways property in the Tankwa Karoo. This is the place to step off the grid to experience big skies and wide-open spaces. The vastness of the landscapes instilled a sense of tranquillity, and I was happy we stayed a third night to savour it.

Every aspect of this well-lived-in 300-year-old house filled with beautiful collectables functioned seamlessly. We particularly enjoyed the outdoor shower and the fire pit on the stoep. With a glass full of red wine, fires raging and the Milky Way twinkling above us, who needs anything else?

As we were a group of food-obsessed people, each meal was carefully thought through and we all took turns cooking. The large farm kitchen with ample everything and a separate scullery made it easy.

One of the highlights of our stay was a nature drive through the rugged landscapes filled with succulents, which gave us a glimpse of the incredible natural beauty that the Tankwa has to offer. I managed a swim in the Tankwa River, which runs through the property, but the lodge has a lovely plunge pool to cool off in.

The area of Tankwa and the Tankwa National Park is approximately four hour’s drive from Cape Town and is one of the driest regions in South Africa. With summer temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, the area’s name “Tankwa,” which means “land of thirst” in Khoisan, is totally apt. Luckily, we were there in early summer, so the temperatures were very manageable.

Tankwa River Lodge is an off-grid 300-year-old homestead located on a 2,500-hectare Karoo farm. The lodge has solar lights, candles, and paraffin lanterns, making it ideal for those seeking to slow down. The farm boasts a surprisingly lush garden, a fire pit, and a plunge pool. There are comfy couches and plenty of shade for relaxation.

The farm has a 4×4 route and is home to abundant game, including rare sightings of Aardvark. Visitors can enjoy watching the six horses that roam the farm, and dogs are welcome too. The Lodge is a short drive from the Tankwa National Park.

I highly recommend staying for three nights or longer in this unforgettable place. The farm is accessible via a 33km dirt road, and if possible, travel in a 4 x 4. The harsh shale that the Tankwa is known for has a tendency to eat tyres.
