Frequently Asked Questions About Christmas Party Food

What are the best make-ahead Christmas party appetisers? The best make-ahead appetisers include chicken liver pate (can be frozen for weeks), baked camembert (assemble ahead, bake when needed), phyllo pies (freeze unbaked), and sausage rolls (freeze before baking).

How much party food should I prepare per person? For a cocktail party where food is the main focus, plan for 8 to 10 pieces per person. If it’s a drinks party with light snacks, 4 to 6 pieces per person is sufficient. Always prepare extra if your party runs longer than two hours.

Can I freeze Christmas party food in advance? Yes, many party foods freeze beautifully. Chicken liver pate, sausage rolls, phyllo pies, and most dips (except those with fresh herbs) can be frozen for 2 to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving or baking.

What are easy party foods that don’t need cooking? Whipped feta with roasted tomatoes (make ahead and serve at room temperature), hummus variations, smoked snoek pate, caponata, melba toast, and most dips can be prepared in advance and served without reheating.

What cocktails pair well with Christmas party food? Pomegranate cocktails complement cheese-based appetizers beautifully. Gin and tonic with pink grapefruit pairs well with seafood appetizers like ceviche or oysters. Paloma cocktails work wonderfully with spicy or tomato-based dips.

How do I keep party food fresh during a long event? Keep cold dips refrigerated until 30 minutes before serving. For hot appetizers, use warming trays or bake in batches throughout the party. Cover items with cling film to prevent drying out, and refresh platters regularly rather than putting everything out at once.

Baked Camembert with Sundried Tomatoes, Garlic, and Thyme

This is probably my all-time favourite snack and I always keep wheels of Camembert or Brie in the freezer. The pouches of sundried tomato in vinaigrette either available from Woolies or Ina Paarman are always in my pantry. All you need is a clove of garlic and a few sprigs of thyme.

How to Make Melba Toast

Simply freeze the loaf you would like to use (ciabatta works well), then allow it to thaw slightly. Alternatively, use stale bread. Slice the bread very thinly using a bread slicer or electric carving knife (this is a little easier than doing it by hand). Lay the slices on a large baking tray and bake in the oven preheated to 180°C/350°F for about 10 minutes until they harden and just start turning golden brown. Store in a sealed container until ready to use.

Party Planning Tips

When planning your Christmas party menu, consider preparing a mix of cold and hot items. Cold dips and spreads can be made days in advance, whilst hot appetizers like phyllo pies and sausage rolls can be frozen unbaked and cooked fresh on the day. This reduces stress and ensures you can actually enjoy your own party.

For a balanced spread, aim for 3 to 4 different types of appetizers. Include at least one cheese-based option, one vegetable dip or spread, one hot item, and one fresh or seafood option if your guests enjoy it.

Happy festive season friends!
